A writer, Rolin, takes up residence at the deserted Holly House, once the home of the disgraced Lord Sylvester. Lady Sylvester returns, ill, with a companion, Stephanie, whom everyone, including Rolin, believes to be her daughter. Rolin falls for Stephanie and completes his novel under this assumption. Lord Sylvester reappears, briefly embracing Stephanie as his child, but casts her out when she confesses she is only a companion. During a jewelry-store holdup, 6-year-old Millicent Hawthorne, the neglected daughter of a wealthy socialite, falls on her head and is carried home to be reared by Mother Gumpf, the leader of the thieves. The fall cost Millicent her memory, but at night she dreams of her former high-society existence, while during the day she works for Gumpf as a pickpocket and later becomes a cabaret dancer. A friend of the Hawthornes sees Millicent perform, recognizes her, and reports back to Mrs. Hawthorne, who has vowed to be a devoted mother should she ever find her daughter. Finally, after the Hawthornes rescue Millicent from Kraft, the lecherous cabaret manager, an operation restores her memory, and she delights in the love of her long-lost mother.

It sinks in mid-ocean and he, as the sole survivor, is washed upon a island, where he is rescued by Nia, daughter of the tribal chief, Neto.John is puzzled as all of the tribe are white people, but he learns from the tribal chief they are descendant's of English-origin who also are on the island because of a ship wreck a few hundred years ago.

When Gilbert Warren discovers his law partner Arthur Fenton making crooked deals, he severs their relationship and opens an office of his own. Louise Talcott, daughter of Colonel Talcott, is loved by both. She favors Warren. Out of jealousy, when Warren leaves town, Fenton schemes to blacken his name. Warren is appointed to vet the street railway franchise. When Fenton hears of this, he reports to Colonel Talcott and the Mayor that Warren is a grafter. The Colonel floats a deal to test Warren and finds him honest. Later, the Colonel and the Mayor apologize to Warren as he embraces Louise.

Richard Stanton, a millionaire's son whose father intends for him to become a clergyman. However, Richard has fallen in with a bad crowd at college, and the film follows the unfolding events that stem from this conflict and potentially his eventual pursuit of atonement.

Johnny Madden travels to the city and falls in love with Capella. His mother is heartbroken that her son has flown the nest and that the woman he has flown to is a common actress. She had always intended that he would marry their neighbor, Daisy Brown. Mrs. Madden begins secretly putting the screws to Capella to make her abandon Johnny so that he will come back to the farm and Daisy.

Reporter Jane Randall, who works for the Herald and Phil Norton of the Times, are competing to get the story on the Thomas Syndicate regarding when funds will be released to prevent a panic. Both head to the estate of Marsden Thomas who oversees the Syndicate. Through coercion Norton worms the info from Marsden’s son but attempts to hold up the report to do some insider trading. However, Jane with the help of her fiancé Jimmy telegraphs the Herald, gets the scoop and thwarts Nelson.

In the forest, a wood nymph played a pipe of reeds. A faun and his mate emerged from their cavern home. He left his mate, drawn to the nymph's captivating music. The faun's mate, searching for him, heard the nymph's pipes and felt a pang of fear. Following the sound, she found them. Overwhelmed by jealousy and anger at the faun's infatuation, she snatched the pipes and hurled them into the stream, breaking the nymph's spell. The faun, realizing his folly, returned to his mate, and the nymph vanished into the woods.

The young Mormon's father is a beloved and faithful man. This young man becomes a look-out for his community, locating and assisting in the attack of wagon trains to secure new wives for polygamists. One day, he observes a lone wagon train crossing the prairie. He discovers it is a young woman that he falls in love with at first sight. This love leads him to give up his faith and warn the emigrants. He joins in the fight against his own people and they defend themselves with the flag of truth. After his father learns of his son's apostasy, he sadly returns home. The emigrants are killed, the young Mormon takes the place of the emigrant, and together with the girl, they turn to a new life.

The senor, Estabon, lived with his pretty wife and sister in the little cabin in the valley. Alone in the woods he found Robert and John, Robert prone upon the ground from exhaustion and John, quite drunk, beside him. The Spaniard took them home and in the days that followed Robert's health returned, and he grew to love the Spanish girl.

Ralph Cullom is in love with Lucy Bronson and she loves him, but her mother wants him to marry a title. Earl Twombley arrives in America on a business mission. He brings letters of introduction to Mrs. Belknap, Lucy's aunt. Lucy's mother sees an opportunity to arrange a union between Lucy and the Earl.

But his distress is diminished when he finds that she intends to use her income from modelling to publish his poetry.

Bruce Blake, a wealthy and irresponsible playboy, finds himself in trouble after proposing to a dancer and then fleeing to the country under his valet's name, only to find the dancer dead and himself implicated in her murder. He falls for a dairy maid, but the police arrive to arrest him for the murder. Just as he is about to be arrested, news breaks that the dancer died of natural causes, and the case is dropped. Bruce then discovers his dairy maid is actually a millionaire's daughter seeking love for herself.

The gases left in the wake of a comet that passed by earth have the effect of making everyone on the planet lazy and lethargic, and actually stops time.
