The film is about the life of Dmitry Cantemir and the Moldovan people from November 1710 to July 1711. Turkish troops are preparing for war with Russia. The Sultan entrusted him with the throne of Moldavia. Cantemir secretly established ties with Peter I and concluded a military-political agreement with him, according to which Russia took Moldova under its protectorate, pledged to help expel the Turks and restore the former borders of the Moldovan state.

XVIII century. Moldova under Turkish yoke. The local nobility collaborates with the enslavers. Throughout the district in Moldova, the fame of a detachment of haiduks under the leadership of Gruya thundered, instilling fear in the lords and boyars. But Gruya was killed. Imagine the surprise of the authorities when they learned that a new Gruya had appeared and was preparing revenge.

Spring of 1944. In a small village on the banks of the Dniester River, at the kulak estate of Sanda Țițan, everyone awaits the arrival of Soviet power in their own way. Sanda’s eldest son, a Romanian officer, leaves home with the occupying forces. The younger sons head into the forest, taking their mother’s last savings with them. Nikolai withdraws deeper into himself, realizing the futility of his life and vaguely hoping for something new, something bright. And standing firm amidst all this turmoil is Alexandra, Sanda’s steadfast daughter-in-law.

The evil wizard Black Whirlwind steals the herd of a shepherd boy named Andriesh along with his faithful dog Lupar. Andriesh sets off to rescue them. On the way, he receives a magical flute as a gift, which helps him find his way to the wizard's castle — and comes to the aid of Black Whirlwind's numerous victims, who have long suffered from the tyrant's misdeeds.
